10-Minute Graham Balls

You probably made a refrigerator cake last Christmas using Graham Crackers as crust. You didn’t finish the pack so now you have a couple of pieces lying around in the cupboard, gathering (hopefully not) dust. Well, I’ve a Graham recipe that’ll not only give you your money’s worth, but also satisfy your sudden sweet cravings. It only takes 10 minutes to make!

What you’ll need (serves two):

5 long crackers (has three squares each)
Condensed milk
Evaporated milk
Butter
Mortar & Pestle or food processor
Bowl
Oven Toaster

Step 1: Beat It

Using your mortar and pestle, pound your crackers until they’re fine. This may take a while so if you have a food processor in the kitchen, utlize it and save time prepping the balls.

Step 2: Mix It Up

In a bowl, pour 3 tablespoons condensed milk, and 3 tablespoon evaporated milk. Put in the powdered crackers and start mixing. The dough should be wet enough to be compacted, but dry enough to hold a shape.

Step 3: Rolling in the Deep

Line your tray with aluminum foil. Start shaping your dough into balls, roll them in liquid butter, and line them up. The size of your balls depend on how “bite-size” you want them. I made mine about 3/4 inch in diameter. That’s two-bites big for me.

Step 4: Toast!

Toast your balls for 4 minutes or until your butter has completely dried up. The butter also helps hold the shape of the balls. It acts as a sort of crust and adds flavor.

Plate your balls up and enjoy! Best served with a glass of cold milk. Yum!

It’s un-ball-ievably easy!

Me and my boyfriend have been together for more than 6 years already. Yes, that’s a lot of anniversaries, dates and special moments we’ve had together. As cheesy as it is, we want to remember those “good old days” when we become a little bit older. However, it’s rather impossible to remember every single date, don’t you think? Recently we both couldn’t recall what happened during Valentine’s Day of 2010 and 2011. To avoid short-term memory loss, we started documenting our relationship with this nifty application that one of my best friends introduced.

LoveByte, is a Singapore-based startup app that began operations in April of 2011 to help couples maintain (and hopefully improve) their relationship to create a private space just for two, despite distance or different schedules.

So what’s so great about it?

Counts the days you’ve been together
Records past and future events (including milestones such as “meeting the parents”, “favorite movie”, etc.)
Lets you chat with your special someone privately
Suggests fun dates by sending scratchcards
Allows you to send each other sweet notes

So I’ll let you guys have a sneak peek of my little world in LoveByte.

Easter Bath Fizzies: DIY Bath Bombs

Ever wonder how they make those fragrant bath bombs from Lush? We did a little research and decided to put a little twist on this project by using Easter egg molds to make our very own Easter Bath Fizzies!

What are bath bombs/fizzies?

These are salt-based thingies you put in your bath. Drop a bath bomb in the tub and it will fizzle and create tiny bubbles.

What do we get from bath bombs?

Bathing with bath bombs is a perfect addition to your relaxation routine because of its health effects. It’s made out of ingredients that cleanse and smoothen your skin and relieve you from certain body pains. Baking Soda is known for its whitening and cleansing properties, while Epsom Salt is a natural mineral that relieves you from arthritic pain, muscle aches, and stiffness and soreness in joints. Essential or Fragrance Oils also helps you relax. If you really want to maximize this project, we recommend that you use Lavender, because it’s one of the most relaxing scents.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

Dry

1 cup Baking Soda
1/4 cup Cream of Tartar or 1/2 cup of Citric Acid (recommended)
1/2 cup Epsom salt (from Healthy Options - P99)
1/2 cup Corn Starch

Wet

2 tbsp of Oil (we used Canola)
.75 tbsp of Water
2 tsp of Fragrance Oil (P99 from SM Department Store)
2 drops of Food Coloring (but we experimented with the quantity for this tutorial)

Tools

Molds (we used Medium-sized Easter egg shells from Toy Kingdom - P69)
Measuring Cups
Spoons (teaspoon and table spoon)
Spray Bottle (with water)
Mixing Bowl/s
Whisk or your hands

STEP 1: Mix dry ingredients

Add all dry ingredients to your mixing bowl and stir using a whisk or your hands.

STEP 2: Mix wet ingredients

Clean your work station after mixing, then proceed with your wet ingredients and mix them in another bowl (or jar). We used the Garden Fragrance for this project because of its lovely Summery scent! We also experimented on food coloring since it’s for Easter, but don’t add too much (just a drop or two).

STEP 3: Add wet mixture with dry mixture

Slowly add wet ingredients to dry ingredients while whisking or folding until your mixture turns into a damp powdery substance.

STEP 4: Spray a tad of water

Make your mixture more compact by spraying water. 2 to 3 sprays are enough to make it solid. Whisk or fold while spraying.

STEP 5: Put your mixture into the mold

Make sure that you add a little more in the middle part so they won’t separate. It takes a couple of tries to hold them together.

Optional: Add drops of different food coloring before putting mixture into the mold.

STEP 6: Take molds off

Slowly remove the molds, and voila! You now have your bath bomb!

I’m someone who watches my weight but don’t have the patience to count the calories of every single thing I eat, every day of the week. I have been using this app called Calorific (free to download from the Android Market) before the year even began and it has helped me to be more healthy with my food choices. The app looks beautiful and the user interface is simple. It uses pie charts to give you visual information on just how much and how healthy you’re taking in. The best part? It’s so easy to stick with.

We believe that most people want to eat well, and just need a little extra push to think twice about their food decisions. Having a way to record your food makes you more accountable, and if it’s only three categories, it’s easy to stick with it. Traditional calorie trackers require lots of work to search for the correct food item, amking it hard to stick with it… there are always dozens of versions of ketchup in these lists of food—how complicated should it be to select ketchup?

You’ll start with a customizable profile to input your age, weight, height, and how much weight you want to lose per week. The app also asks for your “daily activity level” to determine your daily recommended calorie budget. Pretty easy, right?

When you input food items, it gives you a star rating depending on how close your food ratio is to the IDEAL. Really, the goal now is to make your pie chart ooze with green.

If you’re not sure whether your food is green, yellow, or red, there’s no need to fuss. Calorific has a food search you can use. Just select the size of your portion and the calories are counted for you.

Accuracy isn’t important. It actually discourages me if I have to log exact measurements of what I eat. It takes away the pleasure of food, and makes losing weight a burden. What encourages me to log my meals is seeing, at the end of the day, precisely how healthy I ate just by looking at the star rating of my pie chart. In the same window, I immediately know precisely how below or above my daily recommended calorie budget I am. It’s a fun and easy way of tracking my meals, a start to having a healthier lifestyle.

Something for Everyone: Toile Furniture Accessories and Cafe

Ortigas Home Depot is a nest for supplies and accessories for the house, and a haven for diners, with its countless establishments. Hence, Toile is the perfect fit. It is both a furniture and accessories showroom and a cafe. Unique enough, if in showrooms you can’t “use” the furniture, in Toile, there’s nothing else to use (which we didn’t mind, of course)!

Toile is an unfinished French cloth, usually linen, where patterns are tested on, for the final product. Toile de Juoy on the other hand, is cloth with a French scenic print. From both definitions, Toile is a base for beautiful art.

Upon entering the little cafe, you’d be disoriented at how non-traditional it looks. There’s a high dining table acting as a countertop right in front of the bar area where the sink is, and where the food is prepared. Going farther in, vignettes and snippets of a home occupy the three walls. It’s a nice suprise from the identical interiors other cafes have.

Our orders came with chips and a refreshing dip with cilantro, cream cheese and a house blend. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, finishing everything until the last crumb.

(Toile is also a showroom of Abode & Co., an interior design studio owned by the manager’s wife)

We had a nice chat with the owner and manager of Toile, Mike Magturo. He explained why they named the showroom cafe Toile. He said that since Toile could be different kinds of fabric whose pattern and design could be anything, it was essentially “something for everybody”. They wanted to capture that meaning and welcome everyone into their cafe.

I think the thing that we most loved about this place was how warm and engaging the people were. Mike was such a host. He told us a little bit of Toile’s story and chat us up from the moment we entered. He made sure we were enjoying our food. He was interested in our opinion on art and design (and business matters) that he asked about how they could expand their menu and maybe put up a blog and social pages for the little coffee house.

We loved our short stay in Toile. If we didn’t have other errands that day, we would’ve stayed longer. I’m sure you’ll take in the charm of the place, too, when you visit them. Get that Stellar Look: DIY Galaxy-Printed Shorts

Want those galaxy-printed shorts but can’t afford them? The girls and I have decided to do a little research on how to make your old clothes into something you would want to wear every day! If you want to know how to make galaxy-printed shorts using affordable materials, then keep on reading!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Any Dark Material (denim shorts, black shirt, black shoes, etc.)
Textile Paint (Navy Blue, Red and White)
Sponge
Scissors (to cut your sponge and your pants with)
Old Toothbrush
Glitter Glue
Newspaper

STEP 1: Prepare Your Color Palette
You will need the following colors: navy blue, purple, light blue, light pink, and white. Use white paint as a base and just add a little bit of blue or red to get light blue and light pink. You may also add a tiny amount of white to your purple mixture to lighten it.

STEP 2: The Dabbing Process
Dip your sponge onto the navy blue paint and start dabbing all over your shorts.

Dab in the same manner using the purple paint and only on certain areas.

STEP 3: Paint Your Galaxies

Grab your light blue mixture, dipping the pointy part of your sponge onto the paint. Apply with a swiping motion and diffuse the paint using the broad end. Do the same process on other parts of your shorts. You may also add some light pink to add more depth to your galaxies.

STEP 4: Interstellar Tour

Here comes the fun part! First, put some white paint on your old toothbrush.

Then, using your index finger, swipe the bristles to spread the paint all over the shorts. Try to finish spraying all the paint on your brush to achieve smaller stars.

STEP 5: Star-studded
With a little white paint, dab the tip of your toothbrush to add bigger stars to your galaxies.

STEP 6: Add Glitter
Put glitter glue on any used sponge. Spread the glue all over the sponge, and dab onto the shorts.

STEP 7: Let the front side of your shorts dry, and repeat steps 1 - 6 for the back side.

OPTIONAL STEP: You may also add asterisks using any pointed material (toothpick, pins, etc.) onto your shorts to add a more shine.

AND VOILA!
Don’t afraid to experiment! We had fun doing this, and I’m pretty sure you and your girlfriends are going to love it as well!
